New Minor Update Release; version 0.1.1 is now available to play!

Our original game demo was intended to be submitted into the GMTK Game Jam 2023 [Theme: Roles Reversed], but unfortunately we missed the submission deadline due to some last minute time squeezing & technical difficulties - however, we're still quite happy with what we've made given the circumstances!

In the spirit of the Jam, the first uploaded version of the demo contains only the gameplay that we managed to complete within the original submission timeframe, with only some very minor adjustments & bugfixes added. You may still encounter some game-breaking bugs and hilariously glitchy physics, but we hope you will enjoy our work nonetheless!

Snatching Defeat From The Claws of Victory asks the question; what happens when a game made for giving out prizes, wants them back? Pull, grab, and grip your way to victory as you locate all the prizes that were taken from you!

Snatching Defeat From The Claws of Victory is a 3D, Physics based arcade game made in the Godot 4.1 game engine for the GMTK Game Jam 2023 in a period of 48 hours. Known Bugs & Issues

  • Web version: the quit button & some display settings may not work in this version of the game, and there are some lighting bugs that only occur in this version. Sometimes the audio won't play at all; if this happens, just refresh the browser!
Also there may be some performance or rendering issues on certain browsers, and the web version might not work on MacOS. Chromium based browsers are generally recommended.
  • The in-game menu doesn't capture all input events properly for controllers & keyboards, so you may find yourself controlling the claw unintentionally while the menu is open if using these input methods.

Bonus controls!

  • F1: start game from the menu directly into the world control mode
  • F2 / gamepad left bumper: reset unclaimed prizes shortcut

Very cool idea! I like how the claw exits through the prize chute to grab all of the prizes it considers its belongings. Claws control quite well, and the laser is real useful for positioning above things. The style is nicely pixelated; I can tell a good amount of work was put into texturing. Music is also quite catchy and fits the whole arcade theme.

I will mention some of the bigger problems I noticed:

  • The laser wouldn't show up on some of the objects in the room.
  • Wire connecting the claws could get crazy vibrating & disconnecting. Tho tbh game physics can be a bit wacky like that (maybe make the wire one solid object).
  • The camera can exit the back of the room, with only the abyss to greet you.

Other than that, I still liked the general feel of the game; So with some updates I can see this having an enhanced fun factor. I wish you luck with the future development of this project; It'll be interesting to see a more polished version :D

Thanks for the review! We have some plans to address all of the issues you brought up, although we're definitely going to keep the wire as a more complex group of physics objects. I have some ideas on how to make the wire physics less janky, and we're also planning on drawing a single wire mesh as a multi bezier curve between the segments so it looks less odd too.

In future updates, we would love to add new objectives, possibly even different levels with unique mechanics in them. But it's a bit of a balancing act between working on this or working on our main, as of yet unannounced project. We hope you'll stay tuned for further updates!
